Company History

One of the oldest companies in Stokesley Armstrong Richardson & Co Ltd are Agricultural Traders that have been trading since 1925. Robert Armstrong, a local grocer started the business alongside Appleton Richardson, a local auctioneer, taking over the seed business from William Hodgson at the turn of the century. Throughout the following years other members of the Armstrong family became involved in the expanding business. The company became Limited and in 1925 purchased their mill in Levenside. From then on the seed business grew and left the high street premises as a small shop and administrative office. Directors agreed the company needed an experienced hand to develop the business further and in Great Ayton they found the ideal candidate, Brian Jones. Previously Brian had developed Curtis Moody, part of the Rank Hovis McDougall Group into a thriving agricultural supplies company.

Development

Brian arrived as managing director and principal shareholder and the business really took off, his impact was immediate. Later his success was aided by his three sons, Mark, Nigel and Craig. In the following year depots were opened in Richmond and Whitby, farmland was bought and new lines introduced. This then eased the dependency on the core agri-business with the introduction of the impressive Mill shop and country store which today is hugely successful under the name of Millbry Hill (link) and caters for pet owners, equine enthusiasts and individuals interested in country pursuits. With such diversification division in responsibilities were adopted allowing Nigel Jones to take the reins of the Agri-business and commodity trading while his brother Mark took control of the retail/wholesale side of the company. Further development has been in the way of an entertainments division which is under the direction of Craig Jones.
Today Armstrong Richardson is a multi-million pound company covering customers from Humber to the Scottish borders.
